Wardrobe Feature: Cthulhu necklace

Hello once again - it's the first of the new month, and that means two things; one I have my first day back at uni tomorrow (boo!), and two, it's wardrobe feature time.

cthulhu, eldritch, jewellery, lovecraft, necklace

Strictly speaking, it's just an octopus necklace, but he looks so gloweringly evil that he has to be Cthulhu. I purchased him at Dundee's DoJ-Con, which I attended last year with Ben of The Pop Culture Cynic. He was made by an independent craft business called Sands Engravers and Ironmongers, which specialises in laser cutting.

I don't actually wear this one as a necklace all to often, but I do like wearing him under a shirt collar, as above. In recent years, I've seen a massive upsurge in the awareness of and attention the Lovecraft Mythos, and specifically Cthulhu, is paid; I think it's a good thing, though it's a shame that the other elder gods and old ones don't get the same screen time as the monster of R'lyeh. :P

Are you a H.P. Lovecraft fan, or are you guilty of buying nerdy jewellery and clothing too? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Ahhh, you're feeding my recent outburst of love for Lovecraft's mythos. Sometimes it dims a little, and then suddenly makes it again to the surface - currently I'm looking for a pendant that would remind me of the Shining Trapezohedron, so yeah, let's talk about nerdy jewellery XD Your necklace looks very good worn right under the collar, I guess it wouldn't make such impact if the chain were longer. It looks a bit like it's lifting the collar with tentacles to peek from underneath ;> I wouldn't guess it's just an octopus, if I hadn't read your note, it really looks delightfully evil!

Relly, is there a rise of attention to the lovecraftian beings? I didn't catch any, such a pity. And if it really is - you're right about Cthulhu stealing the spotlight from other monsters. As much as I like him, my favourites are Nyarlathotep, Azathoth and Dagon, and finding something with them is very hard.

    1. I do love me a bit of Lovecraft, as disturbingly racist as he is. :L I saw a few more obviously eldritch jewellery pieces, but I preferred this one,

I think there has been a rise in interest in Cthulhu and its associates; part of it probably steampunk, though I think generally he's become something of a meme on the internet. The internet is always your friend in these enquiries.

  2. I think it has to do with the steampunk thing... for some reason they've chosen cthulhu as their mascot or something. I'd get some lovecraft jewelry. It's been ages since I read the books, but I remember there was some kind of monster I really liked in one of the random short stories: I think it was the moon beast. http://yog-blogsoth.blogspot.com/2012/08/moonbeast.html

    1. Yeah, I think steampunk is part of it - I have a weakness for the moon beast, though I do like Dagon (even though there's no description available).
