Design: Alien Facehugger Corset

As you can probably tell, I have a lot of love for geeky things. Though I love my sci fi, super heroes and science, I don't tend to adorn myself or my surroundings with them - partially because they often look rather incongruous when combined with my regular style, and also because they often look so... tacky. Memorabilia is often plastic and cheap looking, and are just replications of the motifs or characters designed to shout 'look at me and my pop culture tastes!'. I tend to like less obvious indicators of interests, such as the whisky glasses from Blade Runner, or items from a universe which is very design led (also pretty applicable to Blade Runner) as opposed to the standard merchandise.

When the symbols are used by someone who really appreciates design, however, that's another thing entirely. Well made, subtle (or, indeed, not so subtle) nods to our favourite cinema and books in luxurious materials and interpreted through the lens of a style or aesthetic.

Source.

So for that reason I decided to post the Alien Facehugger corset (made by Rage Custom Creations) so we could all sigh over it once again, and long for the perfect marriage of sexualised fashion and sexualised deadly xenomorphs.

Christmas Crafting: NES phone sock

It's always the case around Christmas that I make up for my lack of crafting during the rest of the year (I've got out of the habit with a heavy workload and poor health, unfortunately), and it's no different this year. Thankfully, I've got an accomplice in the gamer, who I've recently infected with the crafting bug - I can't stop him coming up with t shirt designs now.

I made this NES phone sock for his christmas present (we traded a present each early, so no worries about spoilering him). It was made with the use of basic hand stitching, my glue gun and a lot of curses and time. I hate stitching on felt and I'd have fixed things if I had more time (it took longer than anticipated), but he assured me that he loved it. We also made some Mario themed baubles together (and have plans for death star and pac-man ones), but I won't post that until we've completed the set.

Finally, I'm back to knitting - this time a scarf for my uncle. I love the pattern I'm using, and the wool is wonderfully cosy and soft. Photos when finished, though it's not quite as exciting as this phone case.

Anyway, that's the last of this quick post, so hoping all your crafts are going well too!

Wardrobe Feature: Cthulhu necklace

Hello once again - it's the first of the new month, and that means two things; one I have my first day back at uni tomorrow (boo!), and two, it's wardrobe feature time.

cthulhu, eldritch, jewellery, lovecraft, necklace

Strictly speaking, it's just an octopus necklace, but he looks so gloweringly evil that he has to be Cthulhu. I purchased him at Dundee's DoJ-Con, which I attended last year with Ben of The Pop Culture Cynic. He was made by an independent craft business called Sands Engravers and Ironmongers, which specialises in laser cutting.

I don't actually wear this one as a necklace all to often, but I do like wearing him under a shirt collar, as above. In recent years, I've seen a massive upsurge in the awareness of and attention the Lovecraft Mythos, and specifically Cthulhu, is paid; I think it's a good thing, though it's a shame that the other elder gods and old ones don't get the same screen time as the monster of R'lyeh. :P

Are you a H.P. Lovecraft fan, or are you guilty of buying nerdy jewellery and clothing too? Let me know in the comments!
