Red and Black Week 2014, Day 3: Secretariat

Day three of Red and Black Week, and I have my first outfit post - perhaps surprising for someone who blogs frequently on personal fashion. As previously mentioned I don't have an awful lot of red in my wardrobe, which I'm considering changing for next year, but I have made one purchase since I last participated.

Foolishly, I got this skirt in preparation for university in the summer last year; it's far too tight to run for the bus in, and probably a little too femme fatale for patients. I wore it on the day these photographs were taken to a vintage fair with some members of the swing society, and ended up trying to dance rock and roll in it - trying being the operative word. I love it nonetheless, and really want more pencil skirts.

The concept of the femme fatale is an interesting one to me, partially because I've been studying Blade Runner; is her dangerous sexuality empowering or misogynistic? Blade Runner exposes the fallacy of the femme fatale in the character Rachael, and her vulnerability in the neo-noir dystopia makes her one of my favourite characters. For some reason the pairing of this skirt and blouse (very appropriate for the red, white and black theme today) also reminds me of Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction, who is another supposed femme fatale who diverges from the archetype.

Who else is taking part in Red and Black Week? What's your feelings regarding femme fatales, or indeed pencil skirts? Let me know in the comments!

    1. Thanks - I find that if you wear a white shirt or blouse, people tend to not realise that you're wearing lots of black elsewhere. I like the gradient here too, though I didn't realise that it was there until now!

  2. The skirt looks absolutely gorgeous on you. I could use a few pencil skirts too but at the same time, just as you stated, they are pretty inconvenient. I use my bike to get pretty much anywhere so outfits with tight skirts or heels are sadly just not done.
I love the idea of a femme fatale look, maybe I'll do one too:)
    Much love,
    Lis

    1. Thank you! This one is bodycon so is about 5000x worse than a normal pencil skirt, but I do love wearing it nonetheless. Femme fatale is a great aesthetic, even if I'm still unsure how I feel about the character type.

  3. Aaaw, this skirt is very femme fatale, especially combined with the fabulous color of your lisptick. :)

I love pencil skirts and I loveto combine them with badass items, leather and sharp accessories. In fact, I enjoy dressing like a femme fatale every once in a while, it puts me a certain mood, which is, I guess, indeed empowering. In other words, it's an amazing confidence - boost...;)

    1. Thank you very much! It's the most glorious colour - purple under some lights and red under others - and goes on like a dream.

They're really awesome when worn outside of a work aesthetic, which I need to experiment more with. I do love the femme fatale style, and I love how confident it makes one feel; I'm mixed about whether that confidence trumps the treatment of women's sexuality as dangerous or not, but nonetheless film noir is a constant inspiration.

  4. I always adore pencil skirts, and you have the perfect figure for this one! The fabric is just about as fabulous as it gets. And I love that you threw such a bold splash of white into the mix! It's the perfect balance. Gorgeous from head to toe!

    1. Thank you! I absolutely love the damask. I wanted to use a block of white, as most of the other participants have used it in prints and in small doses (which is equally valid).

    1. But they're mine! :P They're basic enough in their style that you could probably find similar ones elsewhere, however.

  6. Gorgeous! I love pencil skirts, they are the foundation of my work wardrobe. I love the colour and pattern of this one, it's very classic and I think you could wear it with so many things!

    1. Thank you! It's a great skirt, but I'm not very confident in incorporating it into different looks, so I'll endeavour to make it more versatile.
